New Zealand United World College Trust

Benefits to Region

The establishment of this united World College would bring substantial regional benefit.

Investment

The capital and operational investment into the region would be significant, with preliminary assessment indicating:

  • $73.5million construction cost for buildings, plus
  • $7 million annual operational expenses.

Economic Diversification

This project aligns directly with the strategic development focus of regional and district government bodies.

Development of educational opportunities is specifically identified as a focus for achieving economic diversification, especially within the Wakatipu.

Mark of Excellence

Reinforces and showcases the region’s profile for quality and opportunity.

Year-round Cashflow

Enhances economic stability through consistent annual operational expenditure – in contrast to what is typical of the tourism sector.

Employment

A United World College would provide significant new employment opportunities. Based on the profile of existing colleges, a college of 240 students would employ:

  • 31 teaching staff
  • 30 administration staff
  • 24 support staff

This is a total of 85 additional long-term, well paid and stable jobs spread throughout the Paradise, Glenorchy and Queenstown areas.

As well as the obvious economic benefit, this employment would contribute significantly to the community’s social depth, vitality and stability.

International Connectivity

International trade is essential to the economy of Otago and Southland and a United World College would connect this region directly to an ever growing number of the world’s young leaders and people of influence.

Such links, based on strong understanding, deep respect and personal affection and friendships, would provide valuable international connections that will strengthen the region’s trade and influence.

International Focus

Our UWC will become an essential place of gathering for world leaders visiting New Zealand – a place for conferencing, connecting, and projecting New Zealand’s place in the world.

This will add valuable profile for the region and further increase its international connectivity.

Community and School Service

The region will benefit substantially from the on-going programme of student service to schools and community interests in the region.  These are outlined in more detail under ‘Our Campus – Service’.

Outward Bound

United World College has partnered with Outward Bound and we anticipate this will lead to Outward Bound operating satellite courses from the United World College site within the Wakatipu.
